Your Career Was a Mission. Your Retirement Should Be an Adventure.
Financial planning and investment management for career professionals in the U.S. Forest Service and other public lands agencies.
You've dedicated your life to stewarding our nation's wild places and have built a legacy of work etched into the American West. But as the end of a long and decorated career comes into view, a new set of questions arises—ones that shift from your professional mission to your personal one:
How do you ensure the financial legacy you leave for your family is as significant as the professional one you're so proud of?
After a lifetime of service, how do you design a retirement that is not an end, but the beginning of your next great personal adventure?
My name is Catherine Kirchner, and I serve as a financial advisor for the career professionals who have dedicated their lives to our public lands. My work is grounded in a deep respect for the land—a value I know many of us who live and work in the American West share. My philosophy of long-term stewardship was forged through years of operating a regenerative farm. This experience gives me a unique perspective on the patience and foresight required to cultivate sustainable growth and build a lasting legacy for the families I serve.
Navigating the transition to retirement shouldn't be complicated. Our process is simple:
Honor Your Legacy: We start by understanding the values that have driven your life's work.
Build a Clear Roadmap: We turn your federal benefits into a durable plan for financial independence.
Design Your Next Adventure: We ensure you have the resources to fully enjoy the freedom you've earned.
Our Approach to Fees and Partnership
We believe that trust begins with transparency. You shouldn't have to sit through a sales pitch to find out what it costs to work with a fee-only financial professional, or wonder if your situation is "complex enough" to warrant financial planning. We clearly list our fees and services below so you can determine if our firm is the right fit for your financial life before we ever get on a call.
Who We Serve Best
Our ideal clients are highly capable professionals, scientists, and leaders. They often have deep ties to federal land management agencies. You are an expert in your field, and you are accustomed to making complex, data-driven decisions.
We do our best work when your financial life has layers of complexity. Our clients typically have a spouse and children, which introduces dual-career coordination, education funding, family protection, estate and legacy planning into the mix. You don't just want to "retire." You have interesting goals to fund, a desire to optimize your taxes, and legacy objectives like planned gifting or charitable giving. You are fully capable of managing this yourself, but you have reached a point where you want to delegate the cognitive load to a specialist so you can focus your time on your career, your family, and the outdoors.
(Note: We also enjoy working with younger "HENRYs"—High Earners, Not Rich Yet. If you are an aggressive saver focused on paying down debt and building wealth before starting a family, we have a specific engagement designed just for you).
Who We Might Not Be a Fit For
If your guaranteed income (FERS Pension + Social Security) easily covers your modest lifestyle, and you plan to simply live off standard TSP distributions without any complex legacy, charitable, or tax-optimization goals, our deep level of planning is likely more horsepower than you need.
We offer two distinct ways to partner together, depending on your stage of life and desired level of delegation:
Option 1: The Strategic Blueprint & Implementation
Fee: $2,700 (Includes the comprehensive plan + 12 months of support)
Who this is for: This engagement serves two specific types of clients perfectly:
The Mid-Career Validator: You are navigating a specific, high-stakes transition (like an agency reorganization or choosing between federal retirement pathways). You are comfortable managing your day-to-day accounts, but you want a professional to build the exact mathematical roadmap to ensure you aren't missing a critical blind spot.
The High Earner, Not Rich Yet (HENRY): You are a young, smart professional saving aggressively and paying down debt. At this stage, paying an ongoing percentage-based fee on your current net worth is simply not in your best financial interest. This option gives you a professional, optimized playbook that you can self-implement for the next 3 to 5 years until your life becomes more complex.
The problems this solves:
The "What Ifs": We model your exact FERS pension scenarios, tax projections, and healthcare costs so you know precisely when you can afford to transition.
The Blueprint: For younger clients, we optimize your cash flow, debt paydown strategy, and benefit elections to ensure your foundation is rock solid. For all clients, we advise of asset allocation based on your current options. And, we provide you with a portfolio analysis and recommendation for all your investment accounts.
The Execution Gap: A plan is only as good as its execution. This fee includes 12 months of ongoing access to our team. As you execute the steps in your plan, we are right here to guide you through it.
Option 2: Ongoing Wealth Management
Fee: Tiered schedule based on Assets Under Management (AUM)
*We do have a $3,000/annual fee minimum. Paid either monthly or quarterly.
Who this is for: This is for the complex household that wants complete, ongoing delegation. You don't just want the blueprint; you want us to build the house, maintain it, and optimize it year after year.
The problems this solves:
Asset Location & Distribution Strategy: It isn’t just about what you own; it’s about where it lives. We strategically place assets across taxable, tax-deferred, and tax-free accounts to maximize your after-tax returns. When you retire, we manage the highly complex mechanics of exactly which accounts to draw from (and when) to minimize your lifetime tax bill.
Family & Legacy Planning: We coordinate your wealth with your family’s values. Whether that means optimizing Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs), setting up planned generational gifting, or ensuring your estate transitions smoothly to your spouse and children, we manage the long-term vision.
Fragmented Wealth & Time Scarcity: You have a TSP, old 401(k)s, IRAs, and brokerage accounts. Your spouse has accounts and assets across their working career. We consolidate, organize, and proactively manage the entire picture as one cohesive ecosystem, so you don't have to spend your weekends researching tax-loss harvesting or market trends.
Ready to explore what this looks like for you?
Our introductory calls are strictly exploratory. We will discuss your current landscape, your family's goals, and which of these two paths makes the most financial sense for your life right now. No pressure, no sales pitches—just a conversation to see if we are a good fit.
